Media DayMarch 31, 2006 CARROLLTON, GA - The mass communications program at the University of West Georgia will host the 25th Annual Media Day on Wednesday, April 5, in the lower level of the Food Services Building (Z-6). This year’s theme for the daylong silver anniversary event is “Celebrating Media Leaders, Networking for Success.” An internship fair will begin at 9:30 a.m. for mass communications majors and pre-mass communications seeking careers in public relations, journalism and broadcasting. More than 20 major media companies and industries will be represented including metro Atlanta and regional television and radio stations, Southwire, Nielsen Media Research and the UWG Communications and Marketing Department. An awards luncheon sponsored by the Times-Georgian will begin at noon with keynote speaker and UWG alumnus Tyler Sieswerda, anchor for KVUE-TV in Austin, TX. The awards ceremony will recognize mass communications students for excellence in public relations, print and broadcast journalism, media production and GPA scores. An hour-long panel discussion with alumni media professionals will continue the celebration at 1:30 p.m. Panel members include Shaunya Chavis, anchor and news director for Fulton County Government Cable Television (FGTV); Jeff Styles, co-host of “The Morning Press” on WGOW (102.3 FM) in Chattanooga, TN; Eric Cravey, president of Cravey Communications, Inc.; James Milans, creative director of iQ Interactive, Inc.; and Angela Webster, editor of Newnan-Coweta Magazine. At 2:30 p.m., a “Networking for Success” session for students, alumni and media professionals will offer additional opportunities for students to learn more about working in the mass communications field. To close out the day, the UWG National Alumni Association and mass communications faculty will host a reception at the Alumni House from 4 – 6 p.m. for former UWG faculty and alumni. Tickets for the luncheon are $5 for students and $10 for guests and can be purchased at the Mass Communications Office in the Humanities Building, room 139. Deadline for ticket sales is April 3.
