Research Day winners

March 27, 2006

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia’s first annual Research Day awarded students for their research in the arts, business, education, humanities, sciences and social sciences. First place winners in each discipline will present their research at this year’s eighth annual Big Night on Thursday, April 6, at 7 p.m. in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts.

Big Night is a big event for students and their faculty advisors and highly competitive with only one student winning in each discipline. Big Night is also an opportunity for the community and alumni to see talented students and their research work and show their support.

The first place winners, their projects and advisors are:

*The Arts: Barrett Bowers of Palmetto, “Looking Within,” Clint Samples and Dr. Debrah Santini, art.

*Business: Kristine Kendal Cooley of Buford and James Searels of Carrollton, “Carrollton Apartment Rental Market Analysis,” Dr. James Burton, marketing and real estate.

*Education: Stephanie S. Hardy of Kingston, “Science Olympiad and Student Learning,” Dr. Donna Harkins, curriculum and instruction.

*Humanities: Phillip Fowler of Douglasville, “Why Are You Wearing That Stupid Man Suit?: A Genre Study of Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko,” Dr. Barbara Brickman, English.

*Sciences: Anna Hix of Snellville, “Automatic Identification and Extraction of Semantic Relations from Dictionary Definitions,” Muhammad A. Rahman, computer science.

*Social Sciences: Christina Tacoronti of Fayetteville, “U.S. Sioux Relations Leading to Wounded Knee,” Dr. Ron Love, history.
