Saxophone and Percussion SymposiumMarch 27, 2006 CARROLLTON, GA - The second annual Saxophone and Percussion Symposium will be held on Thursday, March 30, and on Friday, March 31, at the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts. The University of West Georgia and the UWG Department of Music are hosting the event. The symposium is designed to give junior high and high school students throughout the southeast an opportunity to participate in activities that will advance their instrumental skills. The two-day event is free to student participants. Student musicians will perform in saxophone and percussion ensembles and at the symposium’s closing concert. They’ll also have the opportunity to participate in master classes, attend a saxophone maintenance workshop and engage in discussions with other saxophonists and percussionists. Thursday’s evening recital, held at the Townsend Center’s main stage at 8:15 p.m., will feature performances by UWG saxophone and percussion students and faculty from UWG and Clemson University. Faculty performing at the recital are Dr. John Bleuel, assistant professor of music at UWG, saxophone; Dr. Linda Li-Bleuel, associate professor of music at Clemson University, piano; and Dr. Doug Overmier, director of bands at UWG, percussion. Friday’s closing concert, also held at the Townsend Center’s main stage at 8:15 p.m., will showcase the symposium student participants as well as UWG students in the UWG Saxophone Ensemble, the Jazz Percussion Group and the Percussion Ensemble.
