Trombone Quartet Recital

March 28, 2006

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Faculty Trombone Quartet will perform a recital on Tuesday, April 4, at 8:15 p.m. in the Kathy Cashen Recital Hall.

Elizabeth Jones, Dr. Kevin Mobbs, Peter Mueller and Eric Slay teach music at UWG and recently created the quartet after realizing all four were trombone players. The recital will celebrate their debut and also International Trombone Week, which is the first week in April.

“Once we all heard about each other, we just couldn’t believe there were so many trombonists in one place,” said Mueller. “We just had to get together. When we brought literature from our own libraries to put on a recital, we had enough to play for about 72 hours. But, we decided to keep it to one hour for the recital.”

The program includes “Myths and Legends” by Eric Ewazen; “No More Blues” by Antonio Carlos Jobim; “A Suite for Four Trombones” by Kazimierz Serocki; “Concert Piece for Four Trombones” by Fisher Tull; “Contrapunctus IX” by Johann Sebastian Bach; and “Three pieces for Trombone Quartet” by Eugene Bozza.

Mobbs is an adjunct professor of music at UWG and teaches improvisation and composition in technology, orchestration and directs the Symphony Band. From 1997-2002, Mobbs directed jazz and brass studies at the University of West Florida. He developed the Jazz Ensembles into a community favorite and performed throughout the Gulf Coast region.

Jones is currently teaching euphonium and tuba at UWG. She has performed with many bands including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Tara Winds, the Georgia Southwestern University Band and Mercer University Symphony Band. Jones is also co-founder of the Middle Georgia Arts Festival in Warner-Robbins.

Slay has been instructor of trombone at UWG since 2001. He is a UWG alumnus and has performed with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, Cobb Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Wind Symphony and Orchestra Atlanta. He currently teaches in Fulton County and will soon be the band director for the new South Paulding High School.

Mueller has accompanied at the piano for more than 35 years and freelances as a trombonist in metro Atlanta. He has taught music theory and has performed piano at UWG.
