Chang to perform benefit concert

April 25, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - Margret Chang, student at the University of West Georgia, will perform a benefit concert for Latinos United of Carroll County on Wednesday, May 7, at 3:30 p.m. in the Kathy Cashen Recital Hall in the Humanities Building.

Latinos United of Carroll Country (LUCC) is a non-profit organization committed to helping Latinos gain a sense of agency and facilitating their successful integration into the economic, social, and cultural life of Carroll County.

Chang, a violinist and pianist, has had the desire to share her talents to benefit this organization for more than two year.

UWG News Photo“It all started when Emma Sepulveda, a human rights activist, came to visit UWG. Sepulveda, while describing her experiences as a Chilean exile, spoke ardently about how her current work as a University professor, a photographer, a poet and a community leader were all part of a new type of activism — one that uses art to help people connect with each other,” Chang explained.
Following that presentation, Dr. Mustakova-Possardt, assistant professor of psychology, started the LUCC and Chang demonstrated her admiration by writing an article for student newspaper.

“Looking back, it never fails to amaze me how much Sepulveda and her ‘art of activism’ would influence my thinking and my desire to do something worthy with my gifts as a musician,” she noted. “In a nutshell, the LUCC benefit concert is a tribute to her on-going legacy.”

Chang mentioned that there was yet another motivating factor for her upcoming performance.

“What really motivated me to start work on this event was my experience as a volunteer in the Brookwood Clinic, a component of the LUCC that provides free care to the Latino community,” Chang said. “Though I wasn’t able to work there often, the level of dedication on the part of Dr. Gonzalez (the physician) and his staff touched me to the point that I wanted nothing else but to help the organization in the most significant way possible.”

Chang’s concert is entitled “Synaesthesia.” She explains the title.

“Synaesthesia is not a word that one hears everyday,” Chang said. “Indeed, its very length reflects the complexity of the phenomenon it describes: the experience of receiving a stimulus in one sensory mode and having it give rise to the experience in another. This rare type of sense-association can manifest in a variety of forms, allowing a person to ‘hear’ colors, ‘see’ sounds, or ‘feel’ tastes.”

Admission to the event is $5. Chang’s concert is sponsored by the Honors College at the University of West Georgia, of which Chang is a student.
