April 4, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - University of West Georgia Student Development staff members Dr. Jerry Hall, Dr. Ann Phillips and Sylvia Shortt received awards at the Georgia College Counseling Association (GCCA) conference.

Hall, assistant dean of student services, received the Outstanding Professional Contribution to Knowledge Award; Phillips, a counselor in the Student Development Center, received the Advocacy for College Counseling Award; and Shortt, a counselor in Student Development, received the Professional Leadership Award.

Dr. Melanie McClellan, vice president for student services and dean of students, said, “Our Student Development staff does excellent work at UWG, and they have also provided outstanding professional leadership for other counselors in the state of Georgia.”

The Outstanding Professional Contribution to Knowledge Award is presented to a candidate who has contributed to the advancement of college counseling theory and practice by means of dissertation/thesis, publication or scholarly presentation. The Advocacy for College Counseling Award goes to a candidate who demonstrates advocacy to college counseling services or an organization that has made a significant contribution to the improvement of college counseling services. The Professional Leadership Award is given to a candidate who has demonstrated leadership in some aspect of college counseling and in the GCCA.

“Dr. Hall, Dr. Phillips and Ms. Shortt are all very deserving of these honors, and I am pleased to see their colleagues recognize them,” McClellan added.

In addition to their commitment to counseling, Phillips works with students with disabilities and Shortt is the international student advisor.

Hall said, “The Student Development Center helps students to succeed through college, helping them in all aspects of college life, personal problems, career objectives or study skills. We are very proud of these awards because they come from our peers.”
