College of Education hosts convocation April 8, 2003 CARROLLTON,
GA - The University of West Georgia College of Education will host its
2003 Education Convocation on Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m. in the Education
Center, Rooms 3 and 4. Williams became Georgia’s first African-American assistant state superintendent of schools in 1977. Since then he has served in various associate and deputy state superintendent positions in Georgia. For more than 20 years, he has been the highest-ranking African-American in the Georgia Department of Education. Throughout those years, Williams has served on various education task forces for three governors and received national and state recognition for his work. In 1982, he received the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Service in State Government from Gov. Joe Frank Harris. Williams has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award for contributions to education from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Loadstar Award from the SACS Elementary and Middle School Commission. In honor of his distinguished contributions to public education, he was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame in 1990 for Fort Valley State College, now a University. He has also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Georgia State University College of Education.
