Kielborn receives Presidential Award of Excellence

April 8, 2003

UWG News PhotoCARROLLTON, GA - Dr. Terrie Kielborn, part-time assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of West Georgia, has been awarded the 2002 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching for the state of Georgia.
“It was such an honor to receive this award since it is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a science teacher. It is wonderful to be recognized for my efforts and excellence for teaching science by the President of our country,” said Kielborn. “Now it is my goal to live up to this honor each day, and serve as a mentor and role model for my students and colleagues.”

The program was established in 1983 by The White House and is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. It identifies outstanding mathematics and science teachers at the kindergarten through 12th-grade level in each state and the four U.S. jurisdictions. At the time Kielborn was selected for the award, she taught science at Stewart Middle School in Douglasville.

Teachers selected as Presidential Award recipients serve as models for their colleagues and leaders in the improvement of science and mathematics education.

Kielborn visited Washington, D.C., in mid-March with her husband, Gerald “Bear” Kielborn, a UWG maintenance worker, to be recognized in an award ceremony and participate in a week of meetings and activities with leaders in government and education.
