Fourth-annual Clothesline Project to be held

April 5, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - On Wednesday, April 7, University of West Georgia students may want to head for class a few minutes early to take part in the fourth-annual Clothesline Project, an event sponsored by the Responsible Sexuality Committee.

There will be a tent set up in the area between the Ingram Library and the University Community Center between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for students to decorate a T-shirt that will be hung on a clothesline to show support for survivors of sexual assault. All T-shirts and paint will be provided.

Now an international program, the Clothesline Project started in Cape Cod, Mass., in 1990 to address the issue of violence against women. It offers an opportunity for women affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a T-shirt. Participants then hang the shirts on a clothesline to be viewed by others as a testimony to the problem of violence against women.

According to the Clothesline Project’s website, the clothesline concept originated from the fact that doing laundry has been considered women’s work and, in the days of close-knit neighborhoods, women often exchanged information over backyard fences while hanging their clothes out to dry.

The Clothesline Project at UWG is also supported by Public Safety, Health Services, the UWG Sexual Assault Response Team and the Carroll Rape Crisis Center.
