Scholarship to honor Charles W. Cox

April 9, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - The Atlanta Postal Credit Union has endowed a scholarship at the University of West Georgia to honor the memory of Bowdon native Charles W. Cox. Cox was CEO of the credit union and following his death in 1989, employees and friends made contributions to start a scholarship.

UWG News PhotoAccording to Scott Huffman, interim vice president for University advancement at UWG, the Atlanta Postal Credit Union wanted to insure an award would be made in perpetuity and endowed the scholarship fund, which began in 1993, with a gift of $78,000.

As a financial institution, the credit union specified that the scholarship be awarded to a student in the Richards College of Business.

Colleagues and friends of Cox remembered the 1948 UWG graduate as a leader of the organization who related well to everyone.

Moses M. Spence, chairman of the board of the Atlanta Postal Credit Union and a 1953 UWG graduate, said, “One of the most remarkable things about Mr. Cox was his memory and recognition. He never met a stranger and he never forgot your name.”

Don DeCingue, president of the credit union, counted Cox as one of their great leaders.
“He helped many people and this (scholarship) is a way for him to continue helping people,” DeCinque noted.
