Percussion showcase to be held April 21st

April 10, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - Move over “Stomp” and “Blue Man Group,” there’s a new show in town. The University of West Georgia will host five area percussion ensembles in its inaugural “Night of Percussion,” a showcase concert in the Black Box Theatre of the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts, on Wednesday, April 21, beginning at 8:15 p.m.

The “Night of Percussion” promises an evening of unforgettable music, movement and visual excitement. It could change your whole concept of what percussion is all about.

Award-winning indoor drum lines and competitive ensembles from Carrollton High School and Central High School will open the concert. Each of these ensembles earned top medals at the Southeast Colorguard Competition in Chattanooga, Tenn., last April.

Three of UWG’s percussion ensembles will round out the program. First, the Percussion Techniques Ensemble, a group of non-percussionists who have been studying percussion this semester, will present its class project. Next, the UWG Concert Percussion Ensemble will perform Steve Reich’s “Music for Pieces of Wood,” Comb’s multimedia sensation “Not Just Another Finale,” and other works specially written for percussion instruments.

The program will conclude with the popular UWG Jazz Percussion Group. This ensemble, one of only six such groups in the nation, is preparing for its extended spring tour. It has auditioned and been accepted to perform at the Full Sail School for the Recording Arts in its Live Artist Program and record a music video in the process.

The group will also appear as ship’s entertainment on board the Carnival ship “Fantasy” in route to the Bahamas, and will later perform at Walt Disney World.

There is no admission charge for this event, and attendees should come early because seating is limited. For more information, contact the Department of Music at 770-836-6516.
