Residence Hall Council wins national award April 9, 2004 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Residence Hall Presidents’ Council (RHPC) has been selected to receive the 2004 national Student Award for Leadership Training (SALT), the highest student award given by the American College Personnel Association, for having the best residence hall training program in the nation. A student UWG team will accept the award at the annual conference of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, May 27-30. Also at the conference, they will make a presentation of their winning bid for the award. A team recently made a modified presentation of this bid at the annual American College Personnel Association convention in Philadelphia, April 1-4. Comprised of the student presidents and vice presidents of the councils for each of UWG’s residence halls, the RHPC sponsors and coordinates educational and social programs for the University and its residence hall communities and acts as an advisory board to the Department of Residence Life on matters pertaining to the quality of residential life. It has coordinated student leadership training for officers and members of the UWG residence hall councils for the past two years. For this training program, the RHPC won the regional Student Award for Leadership Training from the South Atlantic Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls in fall 2003. It was chosen for the national award in competition with schools from throughout all eight regions of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls. “I was thrilled that we won the SALT award because of all of the time and dedication that the bid team put into the effort,” said Hope Cannon, UWG national communications coordinator for the RHPC, who co-wrote and coordinated the award bid. “It was awesome to see a group of students that worked so hard and cared so much about our organization get recognized.” Michael Davis, RHPC president, who co-wrote and coordinated the bid with Cannon, said, “The past three years that I have been on the executive board of RHPC, so many people have dedicated a lot of time and energy in the organization in order to get RHPC up and running. When the announcement was made that we won the national award, I felt like we had arrived at that goal and that all the work had paid off. This year has been amazing! Not only did we win the national SALT award, but we had three people serve on the state board from our organization. We also won the Program of the Year for the state!” For more information about the UWG Residence Hall Presidents’ Council, visit its web site at www.westga.edu/~rhpc.
