Tobacco industry insider to lecture

April 1, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - Get the facts about the effects of nicotine and smoking at an informative lecture on Tuesday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. in TLC room 1305. Dr. Victor DeNoble, a former researcher at Phillip Morris, will speak at the University of West Georgia about his knowledge of and experiences in the tobacco industry.

DeNoble earned a doctorate in experimental psychology, and is a research scientist who specializes in the addictive properties of various drugs. He was employed at Phillip Morris in 1979 to research and develop a cigarette that did not have the addictive and negative side effects of the traditional cigarette. DeNoble was able to design a cigarette that reduced its toxins by 80 percent.

DeNoble ran a secret laboratory for Phillip Morris from 1980-1984, and in 1984 he was terminated after proving that nicotine was addictive to humans.

In 1994, DeNoble testified in Congress against Phillip Morris, and was a key witness for the U.S. attorney general’s case against major tobacco companies. As a result of his testimony, the tobacco companies can now be sued, have provided millions in nicotine-related education, and can no longer pander to children.

Admission to this event is free, however, tickets must be obtained at Health Services due to limited seating. If faculty wish to provide extra credit for student participation, they should contact Debra Dugan in Health Services.
