Americorps volunteering on campus April 27, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - AmeriCorps*NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) volunteers have been working on clearing and creating trails around the Little Tallapoosa River on the campus of the University of West Georgia since March 31, and community volunteers are needed to assist with their project on Saturday, April 30, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to its work on the trails around the river, the team is also clearing about five acres of unwanted vegetation in the area and plans to construct a water-sampling platform to extend over the river. As well as creating additional accessible space for community members to hike and view nature, this work will also allow UWG and surrounding schools to utilize the area for outdoor class instruction. “The community as a whole will benefit from this project,” said James Hembree, horticulturalist and project sponsor. “The completed project will provide useful educational and recreational opportunities for the University as it strives to provide a quality education in a personal environment.” A team-based national service program, AmeriCorps*NCCC provides volunteer groups to help with community projects to meet compelling needs in such areas as the environment, education, housing, public safety and disaster relief.
