April 25, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - Dr. David L. White, professor of history at Appalachian State University, has been named Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of West Georgia effective July 1.

Dr. Thomas J. Hynes, vice president for academic affairs, expressed his pleasure that White will be bringing “a wealth of experience to UWG.”

“He received significant support from the scores of colleagues here who have had the chance to meet him and hear his perspectives on a wide range of issues. He is thoughtful, resourceful, energetic and collegial,” Hynes noted. “Like my colleagues, I am excited about the chance to work with him in the collaborative efforts to provide educational excellence in a personal environment.”

White served as acting chair for the Department of Geology at Appalachian State University from 2002-2004, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Roger Williams University from 2001-2002, and director of the graduate program for the Department of History at Appalachian State from 1996-2001.

He has published numerous scholarly works and has presented papers for nearly a dozen professional organizations. His professional recognitions include the University of North Carolina Board of Governors’ Teaching Award and the I.G. Greer Distinguished Professor of History. Among his many academic honors, fellowships and awards, White was granted the U.S. State Department Fulbright in 1991 and numerous Joseph J. Malone Fellowships for research in Cairo, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, and Egypt.

White served as president of the Southeast Region Association for Asian Studies. He is a member of the Association for Asian Studies, the Middle East Studies Association, the National Conference of US-Arab Relations, among others.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Bucknell University and the Ph.D. in history from the University of Virginia.

Hynes also expressed his appreciation to Dr. Pauline Gagnon for her service as interim dean.

“Dr. Gagnon’s contributions to the University have been and will continue to be important and significant. She has been an exceptional colleague and collaborator in moving forward the mission of the College of Arts and Sciences and the University,” Hynes said.
