Career Services collects donations for soldiers in Iraq April 8, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia’s Department of Career Services not only reaches out to students who attend UWG, but it also reaches out to American citizens in different parts of the world. Career Services created a charitable project to collect supplies for two troop units stationed in Iraq. Vicki Hardin, Career Services program specialist, is the mastermind behind the project. Part of her job is to create new volunteer service opportunities for UWG students. As a result of Hardin’s coordination efforts for student volunteer projects, the staff members of Career Services have also begun to identify a monthly project in which they can become involved. The office staff has received donations from local businesses and has collected various “items from home” such as popcorn, bug spray, shampoo and lotion to send to troops. Hardin has also prompted UWG students to send words of encouragement through short letters, and has encouraged first graders at Carrollton Elementary School to submit drawings to be sent overseas to the troops. “We have more than we ever expected, but there is still a need for magazines, snack food items and stuffed bears,” Hardin said. The small stuffed bears will be given to Iraqi children on the street. “It feels good to know that we are helping out, and whether you agree or disagree about why the troops are overseas, it’s important to realize that these men and women are fighting for our country,” said Hardin. Donations will be accepted until April 11 and can be dropped off in Parker Hall in Room 362.
