History Workshop for Georgia teachers April 6, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia’s Department of History is conducting a professional development workshop series for secondary school teachers in Georgia who must infuse new Georgia performance standards in World History into the curriculum. The workshops, offered in collaboration with the UWG College of Education and the Coweta County Schools, are designed for teachers of social sciences and history. These sessions are scheduled from May 27 through June 8 and participants are encouraged to attend all eight sessions. “As the processes of globalization intensify, it is becoming increasingly important for students and teachers alike to expand their understanding of the forces which have shaped our increasingly interconnected world,” noted Dr. Aran Mackinnon, associate professor of history and director of the workshop series. Under the Federal No Child Left Behind Act, the series is funded by a $ 26,679 grant through the Georgia Improving Teacher Quality program. Participants may earn SDU/PLU credits. The series will consist of eight half-day sessions to focus on discussion topics such as “Islam: Origins and Development,” “Germany, the Holocaust and Racism,” and “Russia, the Revolution and its Global impact.” The series will also give participants hands-on demonstrations of websites and other computer-based technology resources. After the completion of the workshop series, teachers will work on lesson plans to be reviewed by the faculty. These extensive learning workshops can only accommodate 25 participants, so registration is required by May 1. Workshop sessions, which will include lunch, will be conducted on the UWG campus.
