Terry Lowry Recital

April 21, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - The Department of Music at the University of West Georgia will welcome pianist and composer Terry Lowry for a performance of traditional and original compositions on Thursday, April 28, at 8:15 p.m. in the Kathy Cashen Recital Hall of the Humanities Building.

The program will feature polonaises and etudes by Chopin, works by Debussy and Scryabin, and pieces by Adam Burnette and UWG student Elizabeth Jacks of Rome. Lowry will also perform one of his own original works and will improvise on a theme provided by the audience, a tradition of pianists that dates back to the 18th century.

Lowry, an International Steinway Artist since 1994, performs over 100 concerts a year. His compositions have been commissioned for the Verona International Choral Festival, the Carroll Symphony Orchestra, the Etowah Chamber Orchestra, the vocal ensemble RareSong and the University of Alabama Tuba Quartet.

An active teacher, conductor and church musician, Lowry currently serves as conductor and music director of the Carroll Symphony Orchestra and as music director for the First Baptist Church in Carrollton.

He began studying piano at the age of 11 under the guidance of his father, Terry Lowry Sr. After graduating from Shorter College in Rome, he continued his music studies at the University of Alabama. He has studied piano, composition and conducting with William Knight, Amanda Penick, Peter DeWitt and John Ratledge.
