Meeting of the Minds

April 4, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - What does it really mean to be in love? Philosophers through the ages have pondered this question and now the University of West Georgia Department of English and Philosophy is offering a rare opportunity for you to hear their thoughts firsthand — well, almost.

At its annual Meeting of the Minds event, philosophy students will portray such philosophers as Socrates, Nietzsche and Kierkegaard as they converse about a topic that is close to most hearts. The event will take place Thursday, April 7, at 7 p.m. in the Kathy Cashen Recital Hall in the Humanities Building.

“The students have put in a lot of work for this event. They each did research on their philosopher’s position and wrote a monologue that then the script writer put together into an engaging dialogue,” said Dr. Janet Donohoe, associate professor of philosophy and faculty advisor for Meeting of the Minds. “This is the fifth year that we have done such an event, and it has always been a big hit.”

Following the performance, the students will take questions from audience members.

Philosophers in attendance will be: Socrates as played by Mindy Lindstrom of Lawrenceville, Montaigne as played by Ethan Held of Alto, Schopenhauer as played by Brian Larkin of Carrollton, Nietzsche as played by Jake Earl of Dallas, Kierkegaard as played by Matt Lewis of Atlanta, and Krishnamurti as played by Josh Eaton of Athens. Meeting of the Minds is written by Karen Reed of Augusta and directed by Michelle Fellows of Lithia Springs.

There is no charge for the event. For more information, contact Donohoe at 678-839-4743.
