Nursing students attend NSNA Seminar April 28, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - Six nursing students from the University of West Georgia attended the National Student Nursing Association (NSNA) seminar held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Students who attended the seminar in student leadership workshops were able to meet and learn from other nursing students from across the country. They also met Dr. Richard H. Carmona, the Surgeon General. Amy Goodwin, assistant professor of nursing, was one of the two faculty advisors for NSNA who attended the trip. “He was human, that is what I liked best,” Goodwin said, referring to the Surgeon General. “He told his story about being from an immigrant family in New York, and it let us know that he understands the poverty and societal pressures that we go through. It was powerful.” The other attending advisor was Julie Williard, assistant professor of nursing. To fund the trip, nursing students held a job fair where they asked health care providers that were interested in employing student nurses to pay for a booth at the fair. “We worked really hard on the fundraiser, but it was definitely worth it in the long run because of my chance to meet the Surgeon General. He is truly amazing,” said Nicole Hardeman, member of NSNA. In addition to the learning opportunities, the UWG students also assisted in a service project by participating in a local blood drive. The students who attended were Chase Middleton, Fayetteville; Pennie Nichols, Peachtree City; Nicole Hardeman, Dacula; Diana Rogers, Peachtree City; Amanda Denney, Carrollton; and Melanie Sims, Franklin.
