Spring Choral Concert

April 21, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will present their Spring Choral Concert on Tuesday, April 26, at 8:15 p.m. at the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts. The concert will be free to UWG students.

Dr. Kevin Hibbard, professor of music and director of choir at UWG will direct the group. Accompanying the singers on piano will be Jan Adams, staff accompanist, and senior music performance major Wayne Gilreath.

The concert will include traditional classical choral music by Brahms and Mozart, a few contemporary compositions and a small amount of popular music.

According to Hibbard, “We’ve decided to lighten up a bit for our final concert of the year.”

Some of the more traditional pieces that the group will perform are Mozart’s Regina Coeli, an extended single-movement composition that alternates between chorus and four soloists, and Liebeslieder by Johannes Brahms. The Brahms composition (originally intended for four vocal soloists and four-hand piano) is a set of 18 short German love poems set to music, most often performed with choral forces.

The contemporary and popular music portions of the program will include a medley from the musical West Side Story as well as the Latin classic “Brazil,” which will feature vocal soloist Jennifer Andall. Among several shorter contemporary pieces performed will be the spiritual piece Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho.
