Sunbelt Jazz Festival

April 21, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - The 20th Annual Sunbelt Jazz Festival at the University of West Georgia will culminate in a performance by the UWG Jazz Ensemble and saxophonist Mariano Pacetti on Friday, April 29, at 8 p.m. in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts.

UWG hosts the festival each April, with the Jazz Ensemble as resident band and a concert with the guest clinician as the final event. Pacetti is this year’s clinician.

The Jazz Ensemble is comprised of 19 musicians directed by Dr. Daniel Bakos, professor of music. The ensemble performs jazz music of famous and historic bands such as Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Duke Ellington and Stand Kenton, along with more contemporary works from such musicians as Tom Kubis, Lew Anderson and John Fedchock.

The ensemble, which performs extensively throughout the Southeast, completed its first tour of Europe in 2001 and is currently working toward a second European tour.

Some of the well-known musicians who have played with the ensemble are Chris Vadala, Vince DiMartino, Bobby Shew, Marvin Stamm, Lew Soloff, Joe Temperly, Rob McConnell and Gary Foster.

Tickets for the Sunbelt Jazz Festival performance are $10 for general admission, $5 for senior citizens, and $3 for children under 12 and students with a valid UWG ID. For tickets, contact the Townsend Center Box Office at 678-839-4722. For more information about the performance, contact the Department of Music at 678-839-6516.
