Waring Archaeological Lab Open House April 25, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Antonio J. Waring Jr. Archaeological Laboratory will have an open house on Saturday, April 30, from noon to 3 p.m., to kick off the beginning of Archaeological Month in May. The open house will feature a behind-the-scenes tour of the laboratory, archaeology-related games and an on-site mock excavation pit where participants will be introduced to basic archaeological methods and techniques used at real archaeological field sites. “We want our visitors to have the chance to experience firsthand the responsibilities that archaeologists have in preserving and protecting our history,” said Rebecca Medeiros, Waring education assistant. James Spake, a skilled trades worker at UWG, will give live demonstrations on flint knapping to teach participants the skills and techniques needed to create projectile points and axes. Visitors are also encouraged to bring their own artifacts to be identified by Dr. Ray Crook, laboratory director. Exhibits about archaeology and the Waring Laboratory are on display in the Ingram Library on campus through May 31. The Waring Lab is located near the Food Services Building, across from the UWG track. The open house will take place rain or shine.
