Phil McDowell Scholarship Fund

April 5, 2006

CARROLLTON, GA - The Phil McDowell Scholarship Endowment Fund has been established at the University of West Georgia by friends and family of McDowell to honor his memory and assist deserving Central High School students wishing to further their education at UWG.

McDowell, who attended UWG, was killed in an automobile accident in October of 2005. He was an entrepreneur and owner of a construction and development company. McDowell played a significant role in the formation of the Community Bank of West Georgia and served as chairman of the Board of Directors.

According to McDowell’s wife, Samantha, he learned the value of hard work while working with his father in the construction industry as he grew up. During his high school years, McDowell played football and golf for Central High School, lettering in both sports during his senior year.

“Phil was not the star player but he loved being a part of the team,” noted his mother Trudy McDowell. “Phil would have loved this scholarship endowment.”

Recipients of the scholarship must be a graduating senior from Central High School in Carroll County and must have participated in any junior or varsity program while at Central. As funds are available, a second scholarship may be awarded to a student from another high school located in Carroll County.

“Phil was such a giving person, never expecting anything in return,” noted Samantha. “He was a ‘live in the moment’ kind of person and always got the most out of what he was doing at the time.”

McDowell had two sons, Taylor and Dylon.
