Observatory open for eclipse May 13, 2003 CARROLLTON, GA - A lunar eclipse will occur on May 15-16 and if the weather is clear, the Observatory at the University of West Georgia will be open from 10 p.m. on May 15 until 12:30 a.m. on May 16. According to Dr. Bob Powell, professor of physics and director of the Observatory, a lunar eclipse can be enjoyed with the unaided eye, binoculars or a telescope at low magnification. The timing of the eclipse is as follows: partial eclipse begins at 10:03 p.m.; total eclipse begins at 11:14 p.m.; mid eclipse is at 11:40 p.m.; total eclipse ends at 12:06 a.m.; and partial eclipse ends at 1:17 a.m. “There is a penumbra eclipse before and after the partial eclipse, but is less distinct than the partial and total phases of the eclipse,” Powell explained. -30- |
