West Georgia’s summer camps offer children and teens numerous opportunities for learning and adventure in a safe, nurturing environment on the University campus in Carrollton and at various locations in Newnan. Many of the camps have an academic component designed to show how learning can be fun, with one goal of the program being to help young people feel comfortable in a University setting to prepare them for college life in the future. This summer, a new camp also offers opportunities for older participants. Grands Camp provides fun-filled adventures geared toward bringing grandparents and grandchildren closer together. This camp will be offered July 21-25, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Several week-long sessions of Day Camp and Teen Camp offer activities from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accommodate the schedules of working parents, and lunches are provided. Teens ages 13-15 enjoy group activities, a daily swim in the University pool, and computer lab sessions using new software applications during Teen Camp. They also explore an academic subject during each of the one-week sessions offered: July 21-25 and July 28-Aug. 1. The academic emphasis for the July 21 camp will be crime scene investigations with age-appropriate subject matter; the subject for the July 28 camp will be environmental studies. For children ages 6-12, Day Camp offers a week of summer adventure filled with arts and crafts, swimming and computer lab time, as well as activities related to the week’s academic focus. Four Day Camps will be offered this summer. The first, June 2-6, is a Reading Adventures week, promising reading-related activities for the younger kids and book writing for the older ones. Camp two, June 9-13, Crime Scene Investigations, will give kids a chance to gather and study clues to solve an age-appropriate crime. Camp three, June 16-20, focuses on Spanish Language and Culture, and Camp four, June 23-27, is Geosciences week, during which kids can discover the wonder of nature that can be found on the campus as well as in their own backyards. Several morning camps will be offered as well. Morning camps end at noon, and during June they may be combined with an afternoon of Day Camp or Teen Camp for an additional fee.
