Youth Leadership Summit May 3, 2004 CARROLLTON, GA - The greatness of Georgia is, and always will be, in its people, according to Gov. Sonny Perdue, who is hosting the first Governor’s Youth Leadership Summit May 23-26 in Atlanta and at the University of West Georgia. The 150 participating student leaders will take part in a mock campaign, election and legislative activities. According to the Youth Summit website, the goal of the summit is to inspire student leaders with a commitment to change the culture of state government to one in which people are more important than politics. Organized by the Georgia Republican Party, the conference will teach students about House and Senate legislative processes. Students will spend Monday and Tuesday in Atlanta at the Capitol and the Governor’s Mansion, and then return to the UWG campus in the evenings to conduct their mock election campaign complete with speeches and voting. A barbeque with Gov. Perdue will highlight the trip to the Governor’s Mansion. In addition to becoming familiar with current political issues and discussing their opinions, they will be assigned two bills to review and change in pre-selected committees. Participating students, ages 16-21, were selected from applications from around the state. The finalists were invited to the Georgia Republican State Headquarters for interviews before 150 were selected to attend the conference.
