Sexual Assault Awareness, Series III May 1, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - One of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s most frightening statistics is that one in every four women will become a victim of sexual assault in her life. In addition, one in six men is a victim of assault. In response to this troubling fact, the men’s organization “1 in 4” was started at the University of West Georgia. The UWG chapter was established in 2003 after Debra Dugan, UWG Health Educator and R.N., and peer educators saw a presentation by the Central Michigan University “1 in 4” chapter. The students were inspired to proactively address this issue on the UWG campus. The philosophy of “1 in 4” focuses on empowering men through education rather than assigning blame. Sexual aggression is not a woman’s issue, rather it is a societal problem. Among the organization’s objectives are to teach students the legal definition of assault, how to help a victim of assault, how to minimize the occurrence of sexual aggression and finally, challenging cultural norms in an effort to promote understanding and respect between genders. UWG’s “1 in 4” group participates in many types of campus advocacy work including educating peers about topics such as the laws concerning sexual assault and sexual decision-making. In addition, the organization identifies high-risk behaviors, such as irresponsible alcohol consumption. Alcohol remains the number one date rape drug. The group also focuses on developing understanding and empathy for victims. “1 in 4” presents their program to all freshman orientations, athletes, and many social organizations. The group also participates in the development of UWG’s annual “Stop Sexual Violence” poster campaign. These posters feature UWG students, reinforcing the anti-sexual violence messages presented during programs. The organization has won a variety of awards including the W. H. Griffin Award for new instructional materials, presented by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine; the Best Small Organization at UWG in spring of 2004; the most Outstanding Program award from Bacchus/Gamma (a national peer education network); first place in educational material from the Georgia Academy of Family Practioners; and national recognition from the American College Health Association for the “Stop Sexual Violence” poster campaign. With a current membership of 25, the leadership of “1 in 4” anticipates expansions of its activities at UWG. According to Corey Hindman, new member educator, “Now that we are somewhat established and recognized on campus, we want to expand our programming to better educate and empower students.” The organization is presently working with female students to develop a women’s group. The “1 in 4” and WIGS (Women’s Interest Group) will work together to inform, support and become peer advocates. The student groups would also like to address high school students, as prom night is the number one date rape night.
