Mike Arons Humanistic Psychology ScholarshipMay 15, 2006 CARROLLTON, GA - The Mike Arons Humanistic Psychology Scholarship will be awarded at the University of West Georgia for the first time in fall 2006, now that it has reached endowment status thanks to generous gifts from former students, faculty and friends.
The scholarship will benefit a graduate student majoring in psychology. Arons, who retired from the university in June 2000, was recruited in 1968 to establish the humanistic psychology program at West Georgia. After graduating from Wayne State University in 1961 with a degree in psychology, he had completed his doctorate on the subject of creativity research at the Sorbonne. He then returned to the United States to work on post-graduate studies at Brandeis University under Dr. Abraham Maslow, who recommended him to West Georgia. Renowned both nationally and internationally in the field of humanistic psychology, Arons was instrumental in recruiting students from all over the world to study here. A talented sketch artist, he was known for his creative teaching methods, and his interest in cross-cultural psychology led him to initiate study abroad programs in Mexico and France. During his career, he has published and presented more than 100 papers. Since his retirement, Arons continues to contribute to the field of psychology and has traveled to such countries as Italy, China, France and Russia. -30- |
