Sertoma Fantasy Baseball CampMay 25, 2006 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia will host the first Sertoma Fantasy Baseball Camp on campus on Wednesday, May 31, and on Thursday, June 1. The camp will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is geared toward children with hearing and speech disabilities. The inaugural and free event is sponsored by the UWG Braves baseball team and Braves coach David “Doc” Fowlkes, the UWG Speech and Hearing Clinic and Geraldine Boddie, instructor in speech-language pathology and the Carroll County Sertoma Club. The baseball camp coincides with Better Hearing and Speech Month. There are 38 players in grades 2-6 registered to participate. The group has 28 hearing-impaired children. UWG student clinicians, UWG baseball players and Sertoma Club members will help coordinate the two-day event. Equipment and refreshments will be provided. Boddie said she hopes the camp becomes an annual event. “We have to thank the Sertoma Club for this,” said Boddie. “This camp is a wonderful thing for everyone, especially the children. They are coming in from as far away as Troop County. It gives our university students an opportunity for instruction and the children get a chance to enjoy the fun of baseball and to interact with others their own age who have hearing and speech difficulties. It is a win-win situation for everyone.” In addition to the camp, the UWG Hearing and Speech Clinic and the Carroll County Sertoma Club will host two free hearing screenings May 30 and June 2. The May 30 screenings are scheduled at the CB&T Bank on South Park Street from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The June 2 screenings are scheduled at the West Georgia National Bank on Maple Street from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Sertoma Club members will give away free gift bags full of goodies and UWG student clinicians will conduct the screenings. The UWG Speech and Hearing Clinic is operated by the Department of Special Education and Speech-Language Pathology. The clinic is located in the Education Center and provides services to clients ranging from infants to adults. Student clinicians, under the supervision of certified and licensed professionals, perform all services. For more information on the camp, call Boddie at 678-839-6166.
