June 15, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - Dr. Judy Butler, associate professor of secondary education at the University of West Georgia, has been appointed to a two-year term on the Education Advisory Committee for the National Constitution Center (NCC).

UWG News PhotoEstablished by the 1988 Constitution Heritage Act under the late President Ronald Reagan, the National Constitution Center is an independent, non-partisan and non-profit organization dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of the U.S. Constitution, its history and its contemporary relevance.

Situated in Independence Mall in Philadelphia, the center tells the story of the U.S. Constitution to more than one million visitors annually through over 100 interactive and multimedia exhibits, photographs, sculpture, text, film and artifacts. Millions more across the country and around the world also visit the center through its web site at www.constitutioncenter.org.

Comprised of educators and administrators in all disciplines from around the country, the center’s Education Advisory Committee offers guidance on its educational programs, which include lesson plans on the Constitution and civic-related topics, teaching resources for service learning projects, scouting badges in such areas as citizenship and the Constitution, and educational events at the center.

“In my classes I teach about the civic mission of schools,” Butler stated. “The resources of the National Constitution Center, via their web site, are good for my students. Specifically, I am responsible for the students preparing to teach social studies. I teach their class on methodology and supervise their experiences in schools. Therefore, this opportunity enhances my major responsibilities at the University.”

Butler was invited to apply for committee membership by the education coordinator for the NCC, which is working to assemble a membership that is nationally representative. Currently the committee has 109 members representing 25 states.

As a benefit of committee membership, Butler will receive priority admission to the NCC Summer Institute and professional development opportunities, as well as complimentary teaching materials and other resources.
