Dining Experience of the Century

June 19, 2006

CARROLLTON, GA - Imagine a fantasy dining experience complete with a chocolate fountain, a gourmet menu, candlelight and musical interludes. Then imagine you are invited.

That is what interior design students at the University of West Georgia are not only imagining, but are making into a reality with the Dining Experience of the Century (DECO).

DECO is one of the largest student projects to celebrate the UWG Centennial and the most expansive interior design project created at the university. It will also be the university’s first International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Campus Center project.

Would you like to dine in a hot air balloon or under the eaves of a tree house? How about dining inside a box of chocolates or a closet filled with gifts and shopping bags from Tiffany’s? At the Arabian Nights table, guests will dine like kings and queens for an elegant dining experience.

The class project began as an idea introduced by two UWG interior design students, Jessica Dial of Newnan and Megan Georgia of Dahlonega. That idea was embraced by their classmates and grew rapidly into the DECO project where more than 20 students will spend their summer building tables, chairs and settings on and off campus.

“As interior design students, we have a true passion for making the world a more beautiful place beginning with the community and the university,” said Dial. “We are in the process of creating the most unique dining environment while allowing our community to experience and participate in the infinite possibilities of design.”

The exclusive event will feature exotic one-of-a-kind tables, chairs and settings, a gourmet meal prepared by a renowned chef, a silent auction and live entertainment. It will be an upscale affair, said Sangwon Sohn, assistant professor of art and advisor to the event.

“This is an opportunity for the community to experience and hear about what these students do,” said Sohn. “This is an execution of ideas and a whole new way of showing those ideas. It will really be an evening to remember.”

The project, which will be open to the public in the new Campus Center on Saturday, Sept. 16, needs community sponsorship. Students are finishing up the design phase of the project and are looking for businesses that will donate materials and financial support. Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Copper Sponsorships are available. Donations for the silent auction are also welcome.

Tickets for the dinner are $100. Tickets for a reception and tour of the dining hall are $25. All ticket holders are eligible to bid at the silent auction.
