Doctorate Degree now offered in Psychology

June 19, 2006

CARROLLTON, GA - The University System of Georgia Board of Regents gave a nod of approval at its June meeting for a new doctorate degree program in psychology at the University of West Georgia.

The degree is a Doctor of Psychology in Individual, Organizational and Community Transformation. The proposed program uses humanistic approaches and qualitative methodologies to emphasize values, self-awareness and mind-body integrated care.

Students pursuing the degree will be required to complete internships and a dissertation based on field experience and research. The program requires at least 60 semester hours beyond the master’s degree and will be taught by existing faculty.

Graduates of the program will be equipped for a variety of careers in settings that include community development, wellness and holistic health, psycho-educational facilitation and personal and executive coaching.

According to Dr. Donadrian Rice, chair and professor of psychology, this is a much-anticipated approval.

“This is a program that the department has wanted since we were granted university status back in 1996,” said Rice. “We began working on it two years ago. Many members of the psychology department spent countless hours on weekends, holidays and summers hammering out the details. This is indeed a momentous occasion.”

Rice also credited Dr. Thomas J. Hynes, interim president of UWG, and other university administrators including Dr. David White, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Jack Jenkins, dean of the Graduate School; and staff and faculty in the College of Education, for their help and guidance.
