Co-op Students Awarded

July 15, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - The Georgia Association for Colleges & Employers recently announced that two University of West Georgia students were recognized at its annual meeting on Jekyll Island. Jennifer L. Kelly, biology major, and Christopher Sanders, management major, received the prestigious Jack Mangham Award in their respective fields of study for exemplary work as Experiential Learning students with their co-op organizations.

UWG News PhotoStudents were nominated to the state association by their co-op employers and by their institutions. Judging was based on work evaluations, an essay by the student on the value of experiential education, extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, and academic performance.

Kelly, from Macon, has been recognized in Who’s Who, has been accepted into the Beta Beta Biological Honor Society, is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society, and has maintained scholarships throughout her University career. She co-oped with the State of Georgia Environmental Protection Division and was cited by her employer as being an exemplary co-op employee.

Dr. Bruce Brewer, director of Career Services at UWG, noted, “Jennifer is the type of highly motivated student who, when placed in a co-op position, reflects the high caliber student who attends UWG and majors in biology.”

Sanders, from Dekalb, maintained a high grade point average and worked as a co-op student with the Georgia-Pacific Corporation of Atlanta. He achieved superior rankings in all categories of his work evaluations and demonstrated a unique ability to balance school, work, and extracurricular activities.

UWG News PhotoSanders’ extracurricular involvements included work with a community children’s program, with a high school, and as a member of a campus organization. His supervisor stated that he had done an “exceptional job — he is dependable, he’s always eager to help and takes the initiative to get the job done.”

Brewer stated that “Chris has been an outstanding co-op student and has definitely represented himself, the institution, and his department well.”

The Jack Mangham Award brings with it a framed certificate, a business portfolio, and a cash award. GACE is an organization that promotes the development of strong relationships between institutions of higher learning and employers who hire the graduates of those institutions.
Jack Mangham was an outstanding individual who exemplified the spirit of collaborative work between students, employers, and institutional representatives.

The Cooperative Education Program at UWG is housed under the Professional Practice Program which is a component of the Department of Career Services. The co-op program provides students with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in their majors and/or fields of study.
