Parents' tech course offered

August 1, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - You're sitting just a few feet from your kids, but do you know what they’re doing — and more important, who they’re doing it with? With increased opportunities for dangerous contacts, the Internet requires more vigilant supervision than the playground or the mall, but how do you go about checking up on your kids’ Net activities?

In an upcoming University of West Georgia continuing education class at the Newnan Center in Newnan, an expert from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will offer guidelines to help keep your kids — and you — safe while surfing. The three-hour Technology Guidelines for Parents class will also cover issues of identity theft, responsible Internet transactions and spotting hackers.

In an opening presentation titled “Profiling a Child on the Net,” GBI computer forensic specialist Vickie Adams will demonstrate how easy it is for a predator to extract seemingly harmless information from a child or teen and use it to locate and contact them. In the hands-on portion of the class, participants will learn to search the history and temp files of their computers for objectionable content and to track sites visited on the Net. Morphing, spamming, spoofing and flaming will also be discussed, as well as how to get to the bottom of urban legends.

The class will be offered at the Newnan Center on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $39. For more information or to register, visit the UWG Department of Continuing Education web site at http://uwgagenda.westga.edu or call the department at 770-836-6611.
