Floral Design course offered August 26, 2004 CARROLLTON, GA - Flower lovers will find an opportunity to rejuvenate the soul while learning a practical new skill in a series of Floral Design classes offered by the University of West Georgia Department of Continuing Education this fall. The public may register for any or all of the six two-hour classes on designing professional-quality floral arrangements. Participants who complete all 12 hours of the comprehensive series will earn a floral design certificate that can open new career paths in the floral design industry. Classes will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday nights beginning Aug. 31. Noted local floral designer Barbara Markham will share her wisdom and experience in flower arranging in a comfortably paced, hands-on environment. In addition to developing their artistic skills, participants will take home every design they create to enhance their home or office environment. “The Floral Design program is a great program,” says Lauri Thompson, a program coordinator in Continuing Education. “The students create true works of art, and about 80 percent of the people who’ve taken the course in the past found a use for it as a career or second job or to enhance their existing vocation. For example, one church secretary is saving her church money by arranging its altar flowers.” Class topics include bud vase bouquets (Aug. 31), corsages (Sept. 14), bouquets in mugs and small containers (Sept. 28), displaying roses (Oct. 12), one-sided centerpieces and hand-tied arrangements (Oct. 26) and round centerpieces (Nov. 9). Completion of the certificate program requires the creation outside of class time of a picture portfolio of the student’s floral designs. The registration deadline for each class is the Friday prior to the class starting date. Individual classes are $25 each; the entire certificate program is $125. There will be an additional cost of about $25 for supplies for each class. Students will receive a list of supplies required during orientation on the first night of class. Classes will meet in the new Continuing Education classroom in Adamson Hall on the UWG campus.
