UWG to get new phone systems August 19, 2004 CARROLLTON, GA - The addition of hundreds of phone lines in the new residence halls prompted the installation of an upgraded phone system at the University of West Georgia. According to Mike Russell, director of Information Technology Services (ITS), the new system will equalize service and feature options across campus. All departments will have the options of voice mail, automated call attendant, call forwarding, conference calling, call back and digital display of caller I.D. Russell noted that the new system is part of the University’s IT strategic plan. When examining threats to the institution during a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) Analysis, the aging phone system was identified as an unbudgeted item which had potential financial risks. In addition, escalating costs for traditional phone services were further burdening decreasing budgets. After the initial pay-off on the equipment, Russell pointed out that the University would realize a significant cost savings. Payment with the new system is based on connectivity, rather than per line. For example, to hook up the three new residence halls would have cost UWG approximately $75,000 initially and $22.50 per line per month. These expenses will not occur with the new system. Instead, there will be costs for initial equipment and installation but no recurring monthly fee. Russell noted that since two-thirds of the phones on campus are in the residence halls, installation was completed in those facilities first. As lines published in the BellSouth Telephone Directory are changed, callers will hear a message providing them with new phone numbers. For previously unpublished numbers, the new numbers will be available in the campus phone book and on the University’s web site. Renee Renfrow, ITS administrative assistant, is scheduling the conversion of systems. For assistance or information, contact her at 770-830-2276. -30- |
