Welcome to West Georgia August 19, 2004 CARROLLTON, GA - Carrollton residents enjoy a free fireworks display each fall as the University of West Georgia welcomes students to campus for the new academic year. The traditional “Fireworks at Sundown” will be held on Sunday, Aug. 22, at Love Valley on campus at approximately 9 p.m. Linda Picklesimer, director of Student Activities, urges Carrollton residents to come to campus with their families and enjoy the show. “Many of our ‘West Georgia Welcome’ events are great family activities and we would love for more community members and faculty to bring their children to campus,” she noted. The activities begin on Friday, Aug. 20, with a Braves Block Party from 9 p.m. – midnight at the University Community Center (UCC) sponsored by Iota Phi Theta. Saturday’s events include the Real Deal Orientation from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the UCC sponsored by the Black Student Alliance (BSA), a fish fry at 5 p.m. in Love Valley sponsored by BSA and the Student Government Association (SGA), and Hallapalooza sponsored by Residence Life. Sunday, in addition to the fireworks show, a foam dance will be held from
8-11 p.m. Other events taking place at the UCC include Funny Photos on Aug. 23 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.; Student Organization and Leadership Fair on Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.; Mechanical Bull on Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.; Spin Art and Caricatures from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.; Oxygen Bar, Airbrush Tattoos and Student Activities Council (SAC) registration on Aug. 26 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.; and Friday After Dark on Aug. 27 at 8 p.m. The deadline for registration for Panhellenic recruitment is Aug. 27 in the Student Activities Office in the UCC. Residence halls will also be sponsoring welcome activities and students should check with their individual hall for a schedule of events.
