English endowment established

August 16, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - English majors at the University of West Georgia received a generous gift from a former faculty member this month.

An endowment of $20,000 has been gifted to the university by Professor Emeritus J. Lincoln DeVillier in memory of his late wife, Mary Anne Wilson Goreau DeVillier.

The Mary Anne (Sugar) Wilson Goreau DeVillier Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship and will be given to any student majoring in the university’s English program.

Mary Anne DeVillier taught at UWG as an assistant professor of English. She was called “Sugar” by her friends and was known for her willingness to help any student who asked, said her husband.

“She was a wonderful woman,” said DeVillier. “There are many reasons for naming the scholarship after her. She helped not only her own students, but other students were attracted to her.”

Dr. David White, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said the gift would have a great impact on his college.

“This is a generous bequest,” said White. “Everyone benefits. It will allow students who may not have the personal resources to continue their education toward a college degree. The state of Georgia and America will benefit in having another well-educated person ready and able to contribute their expertise to American society.”
