Campus Center Topped Out
CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia celebrated its first Topping Out ceremony at the construction site of the UWG Campus Center scheduled to open August 2006. UWG students began their own tradition by covering two steel beams with hundreds of signatures and the beams were then put in place during the ceremony. Blake Lord, president of the Student Government Association, thanked UWG students for financing the three-phase project through increased fees. Phase I (53,724 square feet) will feature a 13,000-square-foot fitness center that will include a 48-foot climbing wall, an indoor running track and a ballroom that seats 800. An evergreen tree, symbolically placed at the top of the building, followed another tradition, which is one of the construction industry’s oldest customs of giving reverence to trees used in building ancient shelters. -30- |
