Men's group to promote sexual assault awareness

September 5, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - One in Four, a group composed of volunteer male students at the University of West Georgia, is a new organization with an unusual mission. They want to bring awareness to the campus community of the issue of sexual assault.

One in Four uses a variety of activities to meet their objectives. First, the group discusses pertinent law concerning sexual assault. The group also focuses on developing understanding and empathy for victims. Discussions will be planned on how to conduct yourself if someone you know is a victim of sexual assault. Finally, One in Four encourages men to openly discuss these issues.

UWG’s group is modeled after the first such organization founded at the University of Virginia. John Foubert, founder of One in Four at Virginia, and Steve Thompson, organizer of the second group at Central Michigan, are consultants to the program at UWG. Currently, Foubert is organizing a One in Four group at William and Mary as the movement currently moves westward to other campuses.

The initial event sponsored by One in Four was a workshop in early September with Don McPherson, former NFL quarterback, on how men can take responsibility for their emotions and relationships.

Upcoming activities include workshops on sexual assault for UWG Peer Educators. A meeting at Watson Hall will be Monday, Sept. 15, at 8 p.m. and a second meeting at Tyus Hall is set for Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 8 p.m. All students are welcome to attend. For more information, contact the respective resident advisers at each hall.

Drs. Tobin Hart, Walter Todd, Said Sewell, and Richard Southall are faculty members acting as advisors to the organization. For more information on how to get involved with One in Four, contact Health Educator Debra Dugan at 770-836-6452.
