CNN Gift to UWG

September 30, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - A gift is never too big, too small, or too new when it’s given for the University of West Georgia’s A DAY campaign. In-kind gifts, as they are commonly referred to, are given throughout the year and are a greatly appreciated addition to the fund raising efforts.

UWG News Photo“In-kind gifts are non-cash tangible items,” explained Scott Huffman, interim vice president for University Advancement. “These gifts usually come in the form of office supplies, various types of equipment, and sometimes even food.”

Gifts are received “in-kind” when a department on campus has a need to make improvements. These groups seek out a business or organization that can address the specific need, and solicit these industries to provide the necessities to advance the project.

“Last year OSF Brightwave donated cabling to Information Technology Services on campus,” Huffman noted. “The department was in dire need of this donation, and it saved the University a tremendous amount of effort and expense.”

The most recent in-kind gift was given by CNN to University Television. The gift of more than $1 million worth of equipment will help the station update the quality of programs produced in the studio.

“The gift includes digital tape machines, character generators, 3-D video effects, audio boards, power supplies, distribution equipment, and more,” explained Dion Wolfe, general manager of University Television. “With this donation, we have improved the look of UTV programming and students are now able to learn with high-end equipment.”

In addition to assisting departments to reach improvement goals, in-kind gifts have an overall impact on the University. On-going relationships are established between the school and donor, and gifts are sometimes given without any solicitation needed.

“Our West Georgia Foundation Board of Trustees often have in-kind gifts at their disposal,” revealed Huffman. “Board member Jim Collins, co-owner of Merrell & Associates and member of UWG’s Athletic Booster Club, saw a need for and supplied a new air conditioning system for the athletic department.”

In-kind gifts have provided remarkable benefits to A DAY for West Georgia. Each gift is counted in monetary value toward the fund raising goal of the campaign. The University actively seeks in-kind donations, because any gift received enhances a department or an organization on campus.
