Granted land to be examined

September 18, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - The proposed land to be granted to the University of West Georgia by the City of Carrollton will get a “hands on” inspection by the Facilities Master Plan consultant.

Dick Galehouse of Sasaki Associates, Inc. of Boston, one of the country’s most experienced consultants for college and University facilities master planning, will return to Carrollton to walk the land and the proposed sites for the new internal campus road.

According to Charles E. Beard, director of University libraries and chair of UWG’s Master Facilities Plan steering committee, Galehouse will examine the proposed road site with representatives from Heritage Hills and other neighborhoods to determine if further modifications are necessary in order for the road to be relatively unobtrusive to Forrest Drive.
Galehouse was retained as consultant to the University’s Master Facilities Plan steering committee. The five-year update of the UWG Master Plan includes extensive study on growth patterns and enrollment predictions, academic and educational support facilities, and land management. The plan will be presented to the University System of Georgia Board of Regents in November.

Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna, UWG president, points to Galehouse’s return visit as an example of the University’s responsiveness to community input even though it is an additional expense.

“Particularly at a time of serious fiscal constraints – the worst in anyone’s memory – that we face today, any expenditure of funds on non-instructional items is an extraordinarily difficult one,” Sethna pointed out.

“In that light, I believe that UWG’s expenditures on beautification of the Forrest Drive area over the past several months and our current decision to spend money on this additional visit, demonstrate a very visible commitment to positive relations and communications with our neighbors. We do this as a genuine extending of a hand of friendship,” Sethna said.
