Foreign language film series

CARROLLTON, GA - The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of West Georgia presents the Fall 2003 International Film Series. This semester the series focuses on coming of age stories from around the word.

All films will be shown on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. in the TLC building, room 1200, and will be followed by discussion led by invited guests.

The series will start Sept. 16 with an Indian film entitled Salaam Bombay (1988). Mira Nair won the best new director at the Cannes Film festival with this film about a homeless 10-year-old boy on the streets of Bombay. Nair uses real street children as actors in the film.

Tuesday, Sept. 30: Beyond Silence: This film examines the complicated life a German girl, Lara, who serves as a translator for her deaf parents. Lara begins studying the clarinet and discovers her love of music. She must choose between her own dreams and helping her parents.

Tuesday, Oct. 14: Central Station: This Brazilian film chronicles the cross country journey of Dora, a cynical letter writer from Rio de Janeiro, and Josué, a 9-year-old boy. As the two travel northward searching for Josué’s father, they learn to trust each other and work together.

Tuesday, Nov. 4: The Children of Shatila: This documentary about Palestine refugee children allows us to see the world through their eyes. The director give two children, Frah, age 11 and Issa, age 12, video cameras to record the realities of daily life.
