Measure for Measure performances September 22, 2003 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Theater Company will perform William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure at the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, Oct. 1 thru Saturday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m., and also on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2:30 p.m. Measure for Measure is a passionate tragicomedy that explores sexual morality and abuse of power. In the play, the Duke of Vienna (played by Kevin Ward, mass communications and theater arts laboratory supervisor) mysteriously leaves his city and appoints Angelo (played by Jared Bissel of Virginia Beach, VA) as his deputy. Order in the city has suffered from years of lax enforcement, and Angelo is determined to restore the laws. The Duke disguises himself as a friar in order to watch what happens. Angelo condemns to death Claudio (played by Steven Reed of Stone Mountain) for getting his fiancée Juliet (played by Stephanie Witcher of Atlanta) pregnant. Claudio’s sister, Isabella (played by Nicole Forgoston of Roswell) hears the news and pleads for her brother’s life. The rest of the play deals with Isabella’s attempts to save her brother, and the drama that it causes. Other members of the cast include Stanley Battle of Stone Mountain, Gillian Wilson of Carrollton, Timothy Reynolds of Savannah, Barbara Evans of Hiram, Kimberly Newton of Chatsworth, Michael Worsham of Cornelia, Chelsea Austin of Snellville, Heather Schroeder of Lilburn, Justin Horn of Lawrenceville, Michael Murphy of Harlem, Chrissy Pike of Duluth and Greg Hurd of Augusta. Other Shakespeare productions previously performed by the Theater Company include Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Much Ado About Nothing.
