Center for Public History holds open house September 26, 2003 CARROLLTON, GA - The Center for Public History at the University of West Georgia will be open on Monday, Oct. 6, to celebrate Georgia Archives Week 2003. The open house will be from 6 to 8 p.m. and will include tours, refreshments and displays from the Center's archives. Members of the Center's staff will be on hand to answer questions from the public. The Center for Public History supports research and assists researchers working on a wide variety of topics, according to Dr. Ann McCleary, associate professor of history and director of the Center. The Center’s archives includes more than 700 tape-recorded oral histories on Carroll County regional history along with collections on Georgia textile mills, regional music, Southern foodways, and other subjects relating to western Georgia. In 2003, the Center for Public History sponsored the "Everybody’s Tuned to the Radio: Music Traditions of West Georgia" concerts and school programs. The award-winning CD "Everybody’s Tuned to the Radio" is a collection of music recordings from the Center's archives and local musicians who performed in the concerts. Copies of the CDs are available for purchase at the Center for Public History. The Center for Public History is located on the second floor of the Pafford Building, Room 207. In coordination with the Center of Public History’s event, the Annie Belle Weaver Special Collections will also host an open house between 6 to 8 p.m. on the same night on the third floor of UWG’s Ingram Library. Georgia Archives Week is designed to educate the citizens of Georgia on the benefits of local and regional archives, and how archives benefit their daily lives. The theme for this year’s Georgia Archives Week is “Looking at the Big Picture,” which reflects the importance of archives and their use.
