Debate Team completes three tournaments September 30, 2004 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia’s debate team has completed a successful stretch of three debate tournaments on three consecutive weekends. After winning the Las Vegas Round Robin, the team of Joseph Koehle, senior from Pittsburgh, and James Thomas, senior from Roswell, attended tournaments at Gonzaga University and Georgia State University. At the Gonzaga University Jesuit Debates held September 16-20, the team of Koehle and Thomas compiled a record of eight wins and three losses, reaching the semifinals and finishing third out of 54 teams. According to Mike Hester, director of UWG debate, along the way, they defeated teams representing such schools as the University of Southern California, University of California at Berkley, Whitman College, and Long Beach State University. Koehle was recognized as the ninth place individual speaker and Thomas was awarded 10th place. At the Georgia State University Debate Tournament held September 24-27, Koehle and Thomas compiled a 7-3 record, reaching the octafinals before being eliminated. Their ninth place finish included victories over teams from schools such as the University of Louisville, Wake Forest University, Richmond University, and Northwestern University. Hester noted that after three top-10 finishes in a four-week period, the duo is taking a breather and catching up on schoolwork. Their next tournament is Halloween weekend at Harvard University. -30- |
