Fall observatory schedule September 20, 2004 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Observatory will be open to the public on Sept. 20 from 9 to 11 p.m. if the sky is clear. The observatory hosts monthly public viewings during the academic year, which are hosted by the observatory director, Dr. Bob Powell. Future fall 2004 viewings will be Oct. 11, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.; Nov. 8, 7 to 8 p.m.; and Dec. 6, 7 to 8 p.m. The Observatory features a Cassegrain reflecting telescope with a mirror whose diameter is 14 inches. It is mounted in an observing room whose dome has a diameter of 16 feet. This system has been used since October 1979. A variety of portable telescopes and accessories are stored at the Observatory. Students at UWG and people from the surrounding area have observed the sun, moon, planets, nebulas, star clusters and galaxies. The facilities are available for observation of solar and lunar eclipses. In
addition, special viewings for community groups, church groups and science
