Health Services Poster wins national recognition September 27, 2004 CARROLLTON, GA - The Stop Sexual Violence poster series produced by the University of West Georgia Health Services and their student peer educators was recently awarded the 2004 Winter Griffith Award for Excellence in Patient Education Materials by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. This series of posters featuring UWG students was photographed by Steven Broome, photographer for the University Communications & Marketing. Debra Dugan, health educator and registered nurse, is the group’s advisor. The award will be presented at the association’s national conference on Nov. 13 in San Francisco. Dugan said she wanted UWG students portrayed in the photographs so that other students could better relate to the posters. “If we just use generic posters, or rely on getting the point across in class, students won’t relate to them as well,” she said. “By using our students in the photographs, the rest of the student body will be more receptive to the message of stopping sexual violence.” The Winter Griffith Award recognizes excellence in written patient and education materials produced by an individual (residency programs, group practice, small rural hospital, etc.), or an organization (large hospital, pharmaceutical manufacturing company, associations, universities, etc.) This award brings national recognition to the work of both Health Services and Broome as the photographer. -30- |
