Venezuelan guest artists present recital

UWG News PhotoCARROLLTON, GA - The Departments of Music and Foreign Language at the University of West Georgia are sponsoring Venezuelan guest artists Alfonso Lopez and Michelle Tabor in a free violin and piano recital to be presented on Monday, Oct. 4, at 8:15 p.m. in Cashen Hall in the Humanities Building.

The duo will also present informal lecture-recitals for Spanish language and music classes throughout the day. Their evening program will feature an adagio by Mozart, a complete Brahms Sonata, “Frates” by Arvo Paert and several works by Sarasate, Revueltas and Ginastera.

Lopez is currently the concertmaster of the Venezuela Symphony Orchestra in Caracas, which is one of the principal orchestras of the country. He is also a professor of violin at the Emil Friedman School. He completed his B.A. and M.A. in music from the University of Michigan and he is a founding member of the Friedman String Quartet. His orchestral work, Caribe Pirana, was premiered in 2000 by the Venezuela Symphony Orchestra.

UWG News PhotoTabor, pianist, grew up in Caracas, Venezuela. She holds B.F.A., M.A., and Ph.D from Tulane University, the University of Denver and Florida State University respectively. She has published articles about composers Alberto Ginastera and Juan Carlos Paz in the journal Latin American Music Review.

In 2001 she performed several recitals in Caracas with flutist Karen Garrison, a faculty member at Auburn University. With Venezuelan violinists, she has performed in the southeastern U.S. during eight concert tours from 2000 to 2004, performed a series of recitals in Caracas during January/February 2004 and presented lecture recitals at the 2003 national meeting of the College Music Society in Miami, FL and Southern Chapter Meetings of CMS between 2001 and 2004.
